How Preply actually works
Preply is a tutor marketplace, not a course. You pick a person, not a curriculum, and the process below is what actually happens between signing up and your first lesson.
- 1
Signing up
Tell Preply which language and what you want from it (travel, exam, business, general fluency).
- 2
Filter and browse tutors
Filter by price, availability and specialty, then watch tutor intro videos and read reviews.
- 3
Booking a lesson
This is the trial lesson. You're charged the tutor's rate plus the one-time platform fee.
- 4
During a lesson
Lessons happen over Preply's own video call tool, with materials shared in-session.
- 5
After a lesson
Keep booking with the same tutor, try another (new platform fee applies), or cancel before the next 28-day cycle.
Step three is the one that costs more than people expect, because the first lesson with any tutor carries Preply's 18% one-time platform fee. What that lesson actually costs is broken down on the trial lesson page.
